Fire Island Pumpkin Barrel Ale

September 5, 2010

Awwwww yeah!! It’s September and that means it’s time for the seasonal brews of fall to appear. If you’re like me, you’ll drink any pumpkin style beer put in front of you because much like pizza, there is no such thing as a bad one. After several web searches, it appears that Idle Hands Bar will be the first to post a review of the beer.

– Pumpkin Ale
– 4.8% ABV
– Fire Island, NY
– THEY SAY:  The 3rd beer and first seasonal from this Long Island, NY brewery is a spice-infused, pumpkin style ale. To create this exceptional brew, the team from Fire Island joined forces with a sustainable New York farm to source local hops to produce a new craft ale of unparalleled quality. Pumpkin Barrel Ale is a masterpiece of hops, herbs and spices: cinnamon, nutmeg, ginger, cloves, allspice and, of course, a ton of real pumpkin to impart a festive, seasonal taste.

REV SAYS:  The smells of spices and cinnamon say this beer is not for the weak of heart. The tastes on the other hand says “I’m a pumpkin beer and I love you.”

Magic Hat HEX Ourtoberfest

September 2, 2010

As we inch ever closer to our grand opening, we’re still out there trying new beers and making changes to our beer menu. Tried a new one this week that’s worth talking about.

– German Ale
– ABV 5.4%
– Burlington, VT
– THEY SAY: A malty amber ale with hints of toffee and caramel and a slightly smoky finish.

REV SAYS:  If you’re not confused by the gaggle of demons partying on the label, you will be by the bitterly-sweet flavor of this robust yet refreshing swig.

Hair of the Dog Fred

June 25, 2010

As we work on narrowing down what our initial beer list will be, we’re learning a lot about beer. While doing a search on high rated beers, we stumbled across the Hair of the Dog Brewery. This brewery is located in Portland, OR and run by 3 intense beer fans out of their garage. Their beers although very hard to get outside of Portland, have very high ratings and in fact, some places rank them at 100 out of 100. We knew we had to try this beer. Thankfully, it is available in NYC and our friends at American Beer Distributors brought us one to try.

– Golden Special Ale
– 10% ABV
– Portland, OR
– THEY SAY: Fred was created to honor beer writer and historian Fred Eckhardt. This golden strong ale incorporates ten hop varieties from five different countries. Through the use of aromatic and rye malt, the beer achieves a unique balance of flavor. We hope that Fred will inspire you to share your knowledge with others as Fred has with us. Fred is 10% alcohol by volume.

REV SAYS – This is the Warped Tour of beers. It’s never the same, it’s always awesome, it doesn’t come around all that often, there’s something for everyone to enjoy and its pure intensity and madness. No 2 sips taste the same!

Defiant Belgian Style Tripel Ale

June 9, 2010

What better way than to celebrate the installation of the sound system of Idle Hands than a beer tasting!?!?! The Defiant Brewing Company lugged a freshly poured and corked bottle of their unfiltered Belgian Style Tripel Ale down from Pearl River, NY for an 11 am, beer is for breakfast, tasting. Our fine friends, Axl and Vince from joined us for the event.

– Belgian Tripel
– 9% ABV
– Pearl River, NY
– THEY SAY: A Belgian Style Tripel Fermented Ale. Brewed with imported Belgian barley and yeast for an authentic balance of classic fruity flavors.

REV SAYS – This delicious creation is made in the traditional Belgian Brewing style but right here in the state of NY. It’s a happy sledge hammer that won’t hurt in the morning.  You’ll thank the unfiltered gods the morning after.
